DOORS CLOSE ON JACKSONS ON GEORGE BEFORE MAJOR REVAMP

Jacksons on George has closed its doors in readiness for a major transformation as part of Lendlease’s Circular Quay development.
Upon completion the venue will open its doors to three levels of brand new dining experiences – including a modern Australian gastropub, restaurant and an outdoor rooftop bar overlooking the new George Street Public Plaza and laneways.

Kimberly Jackson, Project Director of the Circular Quay Tower project, said architect firm Stewart Hollenstein has designed a high quality architectural form that celebrated the unique location and social quality of the site. “The scheme speaks to the intimacy of the new George Street Public Plaza and laneway network at the ground level while integrating with the immersive Circular Quay Tower office building designed by Foster + Partners,” said Ms Jackson.

Creating new places with a history

Stewart Hollenstein was selected from a field of emerging local architects to remodel the much loved Sydney institution following a design competition run according to the City of Sydney’s Competitive Design Policy.

Felicity Stewart, Director of Stewart Hollenstein, said the proposed design is distinct, architecturally refined and memorable. “Jacksons on George will have a redefined relationship with the public realm as it opens up to new George Street Public Plaza. From every level, there will be a strong connection between the interior of the building and the city.”

“The design includes a new façade which wraps the building in a porous veil of ceramic tiles. The building material is inspired by the classic Australian pub tile and the shimmer of the water on Sydney Harbour, while the curved form is influenced by the history of the site as a former boat yard,” said Ms Stewart.

The remodelled Jacksons on George is included in the development application (DA) lodged with the city of Sydney in November 2017. Completion is expected in 2022.
